Mount Holyoke College, SW of Abbey Chapel in the center of a garden
This is known as the Mary Deacon Bullard Sundial. It is a bronze-patina horizontal dial about 16 inches in diameter, with a plain gnomon that rises about 6 inches. The chapter ring has time divided into quarter hours. Roman numerals grace the dial from 5am to 7pm. The dial face has an offset 8-point compass rose The dial sits on an ornate stone pillar resting on a two-step octagonal base.
Owner: Mount Holyoke College
Inscribed along the outer edge of the sundial:
"I count the bright hours only"
Construction Date: unknown
Mayall "Sundials" 1938 describes the dial as 16-inches square dial with inscription "Let others tell of storms and showers / I count only sunny hours" See second photo below circa 2004.
The current dial (2019) is a replacement. The ornate pedestal remains.
