  • This sundial is a memorial for W T Macoun. The dial is a simple bronze horizontal sundial, about 12 inches in diameter. It shows solar time with hour lines from 4 am to 8 pm. Hour marks are Roman numerals. The design accounts for the thick gnomon. The stone octagonal base is about 40 inches high

    The following information is from the Ottawa Horticultural Society. "Dr. William Tyrrell Macoun was a horticulturalist at the Dominion Experimental Farm from 1898-1910 and served as the Dominion Horticulturalist from 1911-1932. As the Dominion Horticulturalist he had 24 experimental farms and stations in Canada under his supervision. He received the Carter Gold Medal for Advancement of Horticulture. He was a founder of the Ontario Horticultural Association as served as the president of the Ottawa Horticultural Society. W. T. Macoun passed away in August 1933. The W.T. Macoun memorial fund was supported by 47 Horticultural Societies with donations. The fund was used to build a sundial and ornamental garden on the site of Dr. Macoun's residence at the Experimental Farm. The ornamental gardens were opened by Prime Minister Mackenzie King and can be seen today." William Tyrrell Macoun was the son of John Macoun, also a famous self-taught botanist, the leading botanical explorer of the Canadian West, and Dominion Botanist of the
    Geological Survey of Canada.
