Description:
  • This painted dial is about 3 by 4 feet with simple lines marking the hours and quarter hours from 8 am to 5 pm. Hours are marked with. Roman numerals. The gnomon is a replacement of the original, coming out of the wall at a perpendicular angle, then bent for the slightly declining dial. Dial's painted coordinates are about 15" south and 27" east of true (Google Earth).

  • On Sept 8, 1565. Spanish admiral Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles sighted the Florida coast,
    establishing the first permanent colony in the United States. Though over the years, small parish churches and the chapel of a hospital were used for worship, Dec. 8, 1797, a new church was completed and formally dedicated. on the banks of the Matanza River. A fire destroyed the church in 1887, but the walls and façade were left standing, and the cathedral was rebuilt.
