Description:
  • The 21 inches in diameter sundial started as a sculpture. A call went out to the boy and girl scouts (and alum men and women) to contributed fossils, and other artifacts. This included an arrowhead found at camp. These objects were incorporated into the finished wax, with the arrowhead embedded on the style edge at the very tip of the gnomon. A mold was taken of the completed sculpture and used to create a casting wax replica of the sculpture.

The bronze dial face was cast in two parts (the gnomon was an integral part of the dial line piece), welded together, cleaned and burnished to create the dial. It contains embossed hour lines and engraved half-hour lines longitudinally adjusted for Worth Ranch, and delineated on two chapter rings for standard time 6am-6pm and savings time 7am-8pm.

The gnomon incorporates many iconic boy scout and camp related bas-relief elements, including an eagle clutching longhorns in its talons, program logos, references to camp legends and history, and representations of local wildlife. On the dial face is a large Scout Eagle and on the bezel perimeter coded Morse messages and the cardinal points.
