Description:
  • A vertical dial on a 15 x 40 foot section of a second story brick wall declining 11° east. The gnomon, hour lines and 7 am to 4 pm Arabic hour numerals are aluminum.

Winter and summer solstice, and the cross-quarter days falling midway between solstices and equinoxes, are shown as lines color-coded to correspond to two graphic illustrations to the left of the dial. One graphic shows the position of the Earth on quarter and cross-quarter days; one represents a side view of the Earth's axial tilt in the orbital plane. The dial was designed as an educational tool to show the dynamic relationship between the Earth and the Sun, and where a person is in the annual cycle when viewing the sundial.
