- Description:
- The STAIRS dial (Schmoyer-Type Adapted Interactive Reliable Sundial) named for donor Dr. Robert Stairs, is a patina bonze sundial with both a meridian and equatorial diameter of 8-ft (2.4m). The design is reminiscent of the small Schmoyer sundial with flanged analemmatic gnomon. Unlike the Schmoyer design, the gnomon is not stretched, and therefore does not need to move north-south near the solstices. The 200-lb (90 kg) gnomon is rotated by a 26-in (66 cm) diameter wheel with counter balance to require less than 8 ft-lb (0.1 kg-m) torque. The giant gnomon is rotated to face the sun and the time is read by a sunlight line on the equatorial ring, showing civil time. The gnomon analemma is divided into analemma flanges, one for Dec 22 to June 21 and the other for June 22 to Dec 21. Hours are shown 4am to 8pm in Arabic numbers show standard time and Roman numerals show daylight saving time.
