2026 - Evan Boxer-Cook

This year there was no Sawyer Dialing Prize.  Instead Evan received a Graduation Celebration at the NASS annual conference in Louisville, KY.  Evan graduated this year (2026) from Bates College with a BA in Classical and Medieval Studies.  His Senior Thesis was on the use of equal hours in ancient Rome - and at graduation, won the award for best research thesis of the year.  Evan has been active in NASS as the primary author of the NASS Sundial Glossary.  At Bates, Evan created classic sundials at the Visualization Lab.  His prototypes included nocturnals, the navicula sundial, the Roman altitude dial, an astrolabe, and several ring dials styled with both bead on wire and pinhole on the Zodiac.  These dials and astrolabe were laser cut and marked in wood.  For several workshops he created multiple wood astrolabes and a box full of plastic ring dials for his students.  To recognize his graduation and avid interest in sundials, Fred Sawyer presented Evan with an Artisan Industrials Spectra Sundial.
