Description:
  • Work to design and make the Analemmatic Sundial was done by students of the sixth grade science class and teacher Eric Newell in 2005. The central walkway uses stepping stones sandblasted with the name of the months. John Westenskow's ceramics classes at Mount Logan Middle School made the time stones. Students surveyed and plotted the location of the stones and provided the physical labor to dig holes and pour cement.

Next to the Analemmatic Sundial is a Solar Calendar (also called a gnomonic sundial) and shows the shadow path at summer and winter solstice and the equinox. The Solar Calendar project began during the 2003-2004 school year.

Both sundial and solar calendar were funded by a grant from the Logan City School District Foundation. Logan Memorials and Brown Monuments provided sandblasting and laser etching of the month stones and explanation plaque.

Part of the sixth grade Utah state curriculum requires that students learn why we have seasons and night and day. These projects unfolded as constructivist learning. The basic idea being that we all learn by creating meaning from experiences. The Analemmatic Sundial and Solar Calendar allow students to discover the answers to these questions by collecting and analyzing real data.
